So Tom is very bored in school and brings his charished tick out to exercise him...Interesting how he and his friend handle playing with the tick and trading eachother's goods once again.
What exactly do you think the teacher did to them as a punishment?
Do you think Tom ever feels ashamed to be made a fool of in front of the class?
For the afternoon break of school he meets Becky at the end of the lane. I think he is very cute with how he approaches talking to her. They talk a bit but I am more interested in how they acted towards eachother. I didn't expect that the girl liked him that much. Do you think that she is faking it or is just very sensitive and just an unexpected tyoe of girl.
Do you think that Tom giving her that bronze knob would ahve solved anything?
Do you think that when she yelled for Tom to come back she wanted to say sorry or to tell him that she hated him???
I liked this chapter over all hope all of you read it...It's getting a lot better!!! -Alison

I don't think that tom ever feels ashamed for the way he acts because he continues to get into trouble almost every day. Even when he says he feels ashamed for something it seems to more a clever excuse than anything.
The teacher did just what was excepted to happen back then. And I agree with Seth, I don't think he even thinks about getting in trouble. It's not that big of a deal for him.
The bronze knob was just a token of affection. I think it's really sweet because those are the types of treasures he really treasures. I think that Becky would of said something to the effect of sorry if he would of came back.
I agree with Seth and with Chole. And I also he enjoys the attention.
It's less boring and a little more understandable. I can actually read it with out being confused.
But I still don't get what's with the tick or the other animals for that matter. Why do they find ticks and dead cats and rats so interesting? And why does Tom trade so much?
Collecting and trading stuff is fun. I actually did it a lot at my old school. Instead of tick we used INK-A-TINKS. They were these really small balls that where in your ink cartridges and you would take them and role them around on your desk. We also used them as currency. I think it would be fun to play the game Tom made up. Its fun, simple and you might get to squash a tick.
Does any one have an opinion as to how old Tom is? I think he’s four to six.
Four to six? I don't think so, I am believing he is no less than 9 no older than 11/12. What do others think?
I think Tom is about eleven or twelve. It's probably hard for you to imagine a life without a television or radio or video game consoles or computers or being on line or cell phones, yet that's the life Tom had. Kids were expected to make up their own fun. If they were bored, it was their own fault. It might seem silly and odd to us that he would consider playing with a tick any kind of fun at all, but for that time, I don't think it was all that unusual.
Tom effort to convince Becky to become engaged shows how resourceful he is. He even went so far as to convince her to kiss him. I'm surprised that he was so shocked about her reaction of finding out about his engagement to Amy Lawrence. After all, he was the one who made such a big deal about how important and special being engaged was. How did he think she would react?
He does try to make up for his error by giving her one of his prized possessions - the bronze knob, but to no avail. He was upset and left, much to Becky's surprise.
I wonder why both of them are so concerned about having their friends know about their engagement? Maybe Tom will feel like he's less of a big shot. Maybe Becky will be just plain embarrassed. I haven't decided yet.
To tell the truth I find this book very boring.
