Chapters 8-11

Chapters 8 -11

Reverend Dimmesdale helps out Hester by talking to the Governor so she can keep Pearl. Pearl gets to start school and stays with Hester.

We learn more about the Reverend Dimmesdale and Mr. Chillingworth. They live together and they have very different opinions on things. Mr. Dimmesdale is sick and Roger Chillingworth offers to help him, but the Reverend refuses to get help from a doctor. We later learn that Reverend Dimmesdale is hiding a big secret that he hasn’t told anyone yet.

Roger Chillingworth wants to keep an eye on the Reverend even though he doesn’t really like Mr. Dimmesdale.

We get to see how different Pearl is from the other kids her age. Pearl is very outspoken, and seems some what happy. She has her own opinion and doesn’t seem bothered about what other people think, and she likes being active and having fun. She is only three years old and is expected to know so much and to be in school.

Do you think that Reverend Dimmesdale is sick because of his secret?
Do you think that the Reverend’s secret has anything to do with Hester?

We found out that Hester’s husband is the doctor, and that he is ashamed of her and doesn’t want to be associated with her. Hester is making money from stitching and sewing clothing items. Hester named her baby girl, Pearl, who doesn’t get along with the other kids because they make fun of her. In chapter seven, we find out that Hester might have Pearl taken away from her.

Do you have any ideas on who Pearl’s father might be? Why do you think that?

Chapter 1-3

These chapters were very confusing.
It starts off and he explains what's going on but as you get into chapters two and three it goes through different viewpoints. First you see it from the town’s people, then from Hester Prynne’s view, and then it seems to go to yet another viewpoint.

We have now met the town’s people and we know that they are going to have an impact on what is going to happen in parts of the story.

Then we have Hester Prynne who is "the women", and who seems to be the main character in the book so far.

Then we have "the man" who is not named but you could tell he is going to be a big part in the book. That's what I think anyway.

How do they know that she committed adultery? Ok they know she was married and they thought her husband got lost at sea because he has been gone for the last two years. But how do they know that she didn't just find the baby or that she was raped. And if he husband was lost at sea then wouldn't it be fornication, not adultery. I mean not that fornication is right or anything but still. These are some things to think about.

I’ve done a little research on this I mean not a lot but a little and I might try to do some more. So feel free to do some more and comment on what you found. Or just give your opinion.
