Chapter 3,
So we know that Tom is indeed old enough to notice girls, especially this new girl in town. What do you think about this development? If you were Auntie Polly would you give Tom a licking or not?
Well there aren't any extra questions so answer the old ones,
What were you expecting to happen in this chapter?
What do you think will happen next?
What character do you like best? Why?
What character can you relate to?
In general what do you think this author is trying to tell us?
What do you think of each relationship?
Who is your least favorite character? Why?
What do you think of the setting and time period?
If it was in present day what do you think would change?
Do you like the writer's style?

I really have nothing to comment on. This chapter didn't seam to pull me in as much as the other chapters, although I did find it funny the way Tom showed off. I also like the part were hes sitting buy the window and splosh! I think the author is going to yous this girl for more comical scenes. I hope Tom gets into more mischief in the next couple of chapters.
Tom has an interesting relationship with his Aunt. I think the fact that she hit him for breaking the sugar bowl and didn't apologize because she would appear weak gives you some idea of what people believed proper child rearing should look like at the time.
Tom knows his Aunt is sorry. He can see it in her eyes. He's angry about it and imagines how guilty she would feel is something happened to him and she hadn't apologized. He's angry because she assumed it was him when it wasn't and that doesn't help matters much.
It's an interesting, complex relationship. I agree with Sal about Tom and his theatrics in front of the new love of his life. After all the effort it took him to get the girlfriend his has now, he must be in love to give it all up so quickly.
Why do you imagine it took so long for him to pick up the pansy?
We're learning more about Tom and the kind of kid his is. Initially, he seems like a trouble maker who's not all that bright. I don't think that's true at all. For me, he's a free spirit who's intelligent and thoughtful. He just doesn't want anyone to know it.
You know what Mr. Kennedy, a lot of kids pull that same mask even now. I'm sure we'll be hearing more of this new girl. I'm not sure if I would hit Tom if I was Aunt Polly, I mean I understand that's was the punishment back then but Hmm... But he was being careless and I'm sure since they are poor sugar means a lot to them.
I like you're analogy of Tom putting on a mask. That creates a great visual picture of Tom, hiding behind something so people don't know the real him. Maybe he's afraid that he won't be liked if he shows the real him. Maybe he's afraid he'll get hurt - not physically- but emotionally.
It happens today, about that you're right. Kids who are intelligent do this sometimes. They don't show how smart they are because they're afraid they'll be looked on as showing off. Maybe they're afraid that others won't want to be friends with them because they're not as smart. Maybe they just want to fit in.
My daughter is smart. I always told her she should never apologize for it or act like she wasn't. That really drives me crazy when people do that.
Chloe along with Mr. K. I liked how you put the Tom in a mask. (Yeah I'm bad with wording at the moment.) Anyway, what I was going to say was that even today poeple hind behind a mask.
Like Mr.K. said he might be afaird of getting hurt emotioanally. Mean I think a lot of poeple do that espeacilly if they like someone that dosen't really fit in with them. Like in the scoail group or even in the right famliy.
And to go along with what Mr.K. said earlier. I think maybe Tom is to bright and is just bored or something, and wants somethings that gets his interests.
