Chapter 12

A lot happened in this chapter, at least I think so. It starts with Becky getting sick and missing school and then Tom gets sick. Aunt Polly get really concerned and tries a lot of different methods to get him well but nothing really worked. Then Aunt Polly hears of something called a pain killer and orders it and gives it to Tom who later gives it to the cat Peter. I really liked the way Mark Twain describes the sight of Peter going crazy and bouncing off the walls. And then taking t he flowers with him out the window. The chapter leaves off with Tom back at school.

How much time do you think has past in this chapter alone?

I'm think maybe a couple of weeks to a month but what is your opinion on the time frame of time that is passing.

Tom is in a real snit about Becky Thatcher. Aunt Polly thinks he's sick. I thought it humorous to read how she reacts. Can you imagine? She scrubs him down. She douses him with cold water and scrubs him down with a rough towel. She rolls him in a sheet, a wet sheet no less, and puts him under blankets until his soul is sweated clean. She fills him with quack cure-alls and still, he didn't get better.

He was heart broken and she didn't know. And then things change, or so he thinks. He goes to school one day, and after many days of absence, Becky shows up. Tom, being Tom of course, shows off. Wanting her to notice him. Wanting her to talk to him. Wanting her to talk to him. But, it's all for naught.

She responds, but not in the way he intends. She says, loud enough for all around to hear I'm sure, he must think himself mighty smart - always showing off.

Twain ends the chapter writing - "Tom's cheeks burned. He gathered himself up and sneaked off, crushed and crestfallen."

Why do you imagine he feels that way? Why are his cheeks burning?

I think that only a couple of days went by.
